THC Seltzer: The Cure for "Hangxiety"?

Been partying a little too hard recently?

If so you might be all too familiar with “hangxiety”: the restlessness, ickiness, and general blah that comprise the hangover experience.

But don’t let hangxiety get you down. There’s a potential way out! Hangxiety is no match for the humble THC seltzer.

Keep reading to learn more about hangxiety — and how to avoid it.

What is hangxiety?

“Hangxiety” describes the unrest your body feels the day after heavy drinking.

Hangxiety is responsible for much of the infamous hangover experience. If you’ve ever experienced a deep sense that something is off after a wild night, yep — you’ve experienced hangxiety.

In simple terms, hangxiety is a cry for help. It results from your body being so imbalanced and ‘off’ that it’s compelled to send you signals that something is wrong!

GABA, glutamate, and other neurotransmitters are the biochemical drivers of these feelings. These neurotransmitters are all too easily antagonized by alcohol, resulting in mental and physical swings.

According to professor of neuropsychopharmacology David Nutt, alcohol’s problems begin the moment you begin drinking it. “Alcohol stimulates GABA, which is why you get relaxed and cheerful when you drink,” he explains. “[...] When people [drink more], they’re even less [nervous] than when they’re a bit drunk.” [1]

While this initial GABA-ergic activity can feel pretty dang good, a corresponding crash usually occurs the next day. Low GABA levels can overstimulate your nervous system, resulting in nervousness, headache, nausea, and disturbed sleep.

Alcohol can also cause a rise in noradrenaline, the hormone responsible for your body’s ‘fight-or-flight’ response. Just like its effects on GABA, alcohol’s effects on noradrenaline are decidedly not worth it in the long run. “Noradrenaline suppresses stress when you first take it, and increases [stress] in withdrawal,” attests David Nutt.

During drinking

  • High GABA
  • High noradrenaline
  • High metabolism
  • Low cortisol
  • Social

After drinking

  • Low GABA
  • Low noradrenaline
  • Low metabolism
  • Low B vitamins
  • High cortisol
  • Anti-social

Balance: the cure for hangxiety?

To distill down all this complexity into something simple, there’s one thing your hungover body needs more than anything else:

Balance.

That’s where your body’s endocannabinoid system comes in.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is an internal network that uses hemp-like compounds to promote communication between one part of your body and the next. With increased communication comes homeostasis, or balance, and this balance allows your body to reset itself into better health.

This might sound cryptic . . . but it’s not. According to renowned CBD expert Dr. Dustin Sulak, your body’s endocannabinoid system “may be the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health.” [2]

What’s most unique about the ECS is that it’s holistic; it has a whole lot of moving parts. These can be grouped into three categories:

  • Receptors that absorb both phytocannabinoids (like CBD and THC) and endocannabinoids (cannabinoids that our own bodies produce).

  • Enzymes that quickly break down excess cannabinoids and endocannabinoids to ensure the ECS stays balanced.

  • Endocannabinoids that function as neurotransmitters and cellular messengers within the brain, mitochondria, muscle cells, and every vital organ.

Endocannabinoid system + THC + CBD = balance

Let’s switch focus to the hemp plant for a second in order to explain how hemp compounds interact with your ECS. Hemp produces numerous compounds that promote homeostasis. One such group of plant compounds is called terpenes. Terpenes are the molecules that give hemp its characteristic scent. While terpenes exist within all plants, hemp is somewhat unique in that it contains the primary terpenes contained in many other plants.

And terpenes do more than just smell good. They’re also potent anti-inflammatory agents, and their small size means they can be absorbed into all sorts of receptors. One hemp terpene, beta-caryophyllene, works with endocannabinoid receptors so effectively that some researchers think it should be reclassified as a cannabinoid. [3]

Some of the main cannabinoids found in hemp include:

  • CBD
  • CBDa
  • THC
  • THCa
  • CBG
  • CBGa
  • CBC
  • CBCa
  • CBN

While these compounds have similar chemical makeups, they have very different effects. CBD binds to CB2 receptors in our ECS to instill calmness, while THC binds to CB1 receptors to instill a euphoric high. Sipz’s blend of both cannabinoids means it provides perfectly balanced effects! [4]

How do THC and CBD affect your endocannabinoid system?

Your endocannabinoid system is so complex that activating it requires a truly holistic solution, and that’s exactly what nature has provided in THC and CBD!

Both these cannabinoids gently and indirectly activate endocannabinoid receptors and helps the body produce more health-boosting endocannabinoids for itself. Considering that many people in today’s stressful culture have imbalanced endocannabinoid systems, this quality couldn’t be more critical. [5]

CBD is even more effective when it’s taken in combination with other cannabinoids and terpenes. This helps ensure that the ECS isn’t oversaturated with a single cannabinoid and instead allows it to be fully engaged. And when the ECS is engaged, good things happen.

Research shows that the ECS responds best to whole plant products that keep their THC, CBD, and terpenes intact. This effect has been described as so beneficial that it even has its own name: the entourage effect. [6

Other ways to get over hangxiety fast

There are other ways to get over hangxiety fast, too. Here are some viable solutions.

  • Get some fresh air. A slow, relaxed walk can lower your stress hormones and calm your nerves. Hiking out in nature may even help get feel-good neurotransmitters back on track. This practice is so powerful that some cultures have given it a name: forest bathing.

  • Get hydrated. Pair your water intake with sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes for best results. And feel free to get some alkalizing bonus points by squeezing fresh lemon or lime into your next glass.

  • Alcohol is known to impair sleep quality. You can speed up your recovery by getting to sleep early the next day. (CBD + THC products may help your sleep quality rebound, too.)

THC Seltzer: summing things up

Our hemp-derived Sipz THC Seltzers may be just the thing to help you rebound from hangxiety. Even better than that, their hangover-free upliftment makes it possible for you to avoid hangxiety symptoms in the first place!
